1. Not planning a social media strategy
Social media marketing is a game you can win only if you have a concrete, measurable strategy. A social media marketing strategy is your handy guide to executing your tactics and materializing your goals. It is your ticket to reach your target market at the right time. It will even set the right tone for you. Moreover, with a marketing strategy, you will have answers to the following questions:
- How will I convey my brand to the market?
- What are the type of contents my audience are interested in?
- What social media platforms my target market use?
- How can I create a demand for my brand?
- What specific results I am aiming for by investing in social media marketing?
- How can I measure the effectiveness of my campaign?
2. Not doing audience research
No business has been successful without putting into consideration the profile of their audience. You need to conduct an audience research because it is the only way your social media marketing efforts will be as effective as you want it to be. You need to discover who your potential customers are, how old they are, what interests them, what they like in social media, who they follow, and so on.
An audience research will give you a better understanding of your target market and it will help you create contents they can relate to. You will be able to set the messaging tone that will draw them to you.
3. Signing up in all social media platforms
Just because you want massive online visibility doesn’t mean you need to join all social networking sites available. Your target market is not everywhere. They don’t have accounts in all platforms. Do not waste your time being active in networks that won’t resonate your brand. What you need to do is to identify at least three social media you can leverage. The key takeaway is to find where your target market is most active in.
4. Cross Platform Auto Posts
Cross -platform posts may save you some time and effort, but it won’t do you any good. In fact, it can affect your social media marketing. Before things hit you right in the face, drop whatever software you are using in auto-publishing one post accross all social networking sites you have.
Keep in mind that people consume different contents from different social media. What is effective in Facebook may not work in Instagram or Twitter. Take the extra mile and understand what your followers from each platform is interested about. From then, optimize your content accordingly.
5. Unwillingness to spend for social media ads
You can easily set up a Twitter or Facebook account for your business. However, getting results is entirely a different story. The social media, especially Facebook, has changed its algorithms. Unless you are paying to play, you cannot expect an ROI solely from organic reach. You need to boost your page to increase your followers and you need to boost your posts to get your message accross.
While some may still unwilling to do this, you should feel otherwise. Your social media marketing efforts will only materialize if you incorporate paid ads into your strategy. This is no longer optional for businesses. This is a must considering that paid ads are now playing a role in the buying decisions of consumers.
6. Not enough rich-media contents
Gone are the days when posts are merely basic texts. Creativity is the key to standout in a social media platform that is bombarded by visuals that will distract your audience. You need to share images, gifs and videos that will attract your followers. It should be something they will like and share. Something that will make them pause.
You don’t need to have big bucks for this. You just need to be original and resourceful. There are free online editing tools, Canva for one, that you can use to create rich-media contents. Make your brand unique and relevant through this and rest assured, your social media marketing ROI will improve.
